Rev. Jesse Jackson, one of the most recognizable and influential civil rights leaders of the modern era, has died after a lifetime spent expanding the boundaries of justice, representation, and political possibility in America.

A close associate of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and later founder of Operation PUSH and the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, Jackson helped carry the Civil Rights Movement into a new generation — connecting racial justice with economic equity, voting rights, labor, education, and global human rights.

Born in Greenville, South Carolina, Jackson rose from the segregated South to national prominence through activism, organizing, and oratory that blended the traditions of the Black church with the urgency of political change. His message was simple but transformative: communities historically excluded from power must become central to democracy.

That vision took national form in his groundbreaking presidential campaigns in 1984 and 1988. Though he did not win the Democratic nomination, Jackson built one of the most diverse political coalitions in U.S. history and inspired millions of new voters. His campaign slogan — “Keep hope alive” — became a defining call to civic participation and collective belief.

Beyond elections, Jackson advocated for workers, spoke against apartheid, supported voting rights, and negotiated humanitarian efforts abroad. He remained a constant presence wherever injustice demanded attention.

For many African Americans, Jackson symbolized continuity with the Civil Rights generation — a leader who carried forward both the language and the mission of that movement into contemporary public life. His influence can be seen today in expanded voter coalitions, diverse leadership, and a broader national understanding of justice.

Rev. Jesse Jackson’s life reminds us that hope is not passive — it is organized, defended, and carried forward.

And in that work, his legacy continues.
