Josephine Baker was more than just an entertainer — she was a symbol of courage, resilience, and activism who left an indelible mark on Harlem and the world. Rising to fame during the Harlem Renaissance, Baker’s dazzling performances and magnetic charm captivated audiences internationally, making her one of the first Black global superstars.
A Star in the Harlem Renaissance
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Josephine found her artistic home in Harlem during the 1920s and 1930s, where she became a defining figure of the Harlem Renaissance — a cultural movement celebrating Black art, music, and literature. Her legendary performances at the Cotton Club and other iconic venues set new standards for stagecraft and showmanship.
Breaking Barriers on and off Stage
Josephine broke racial barriers throughout her career. In Paris, she became a celebrated star, using her fame to challenge segregation and discrimination. During World War II, she worked as a spy for the French Resistance, risking her life for freedom and justice.
Her activism continued in the U.S., where she was a vocal advocate for civil rights and refused to perform for segregated audiences. She marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the 1963 March on Washington, further solidifying her legacy as a pioneer for equality.
Enduring Legacy
Josephine Baker’s influence lives on through her groundbreaking artistry and fearless activism. She paved the way for generations of Black performers and remains a beacon of empowerment for artists and activists alike.
